Dr. Corina Sandu Receives Dual SAE Awards

Dr. Corina Sandu of Virginia Tech Honored With SAE International Forest R. McFarland Award

WARRENDALE, Pa. (May XX, 2013) – Dr. Corina Sandu, Associate Professor, Virginia Tech, has been honored with SAE International’s Forest R. McFarland Award. Established in 1979, this award recognizes individuals for their outstanding contributions toward the work of the SAE Engineering Meetings Board (EMB) in the planning, development and dissemination of technical information through technical meetings, conferences and professional development programs or outstanding contributions to the EMB operations in facilitating or enhancing the interchanges of technical information.

The award is administered by the EMB and honors the late Forest r. McFarland, who was himself an outstanding session organizer, a chairman of the Passenger Car Activity and a member of the EMB. Funding for this award is through a bequest by Mr. McFarland to SAE.

Dr. Corina Sandu is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech, and the Director of the Advanced Vehicle Dynamics Laboratory. Dr. Sandu’s research focuses on multibody dynamics modeling, uncertainty quantification and propagation, parameter estimation, soil and terrain modeling, on-road and off-road vehicle dynamics, tire and track modeling, and terramechanics. Dr. Sandu is a Fellow of ASME and the elected secretary of the ASME Design Engineering Division Executive Committee. She has served as the Chair of ASME Vehicle Design Committee for three years, and is the Vice-Chair of the SAE Chassis and Suspension Committee. She is also an active member of ISTVS.

Dr. Sandu is editor-in-chief of the SAE International Journal of Commercial Vehicles, editor-in-chief of the Journal for Automotive and Transport Engineering, editor of the Journal of Terramechanics, associate editor of the ASME Journal of Vibration and Acoustics, and editorial board member of the International Journal of Vehicle Systems Modeling and Testing. Dr. Sandu is a member of the SAE Ground Vehicle Reliability Committee’s Terrain Modeling and Characterization group, the Women Engineers Committee, and the Vehicle Dynamics Committee’s Tire Modeling group.

ARC faculty Dr. Corina Sandu will be presented with two awards by the Society of Automotive Engineers at the SAE 2013 World Congress.

The Forest R. McFarland Award, which "recognizes individuals for their outstanding contributions toward the work of the SAE Engineering Meetings Board", was established in 1979.

The Rodica Baranescu Award for Technical & Leadership Excellence in Commercial Vehicle Engineering "celebrates the successes of women in the engineering profession and to recognize their leadership and technical contributions in the Commercial Vehicle Engineering sector".

Dr. Sandu is an Associate Professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). She current leads an ARC research project involving off-road soft-soil tire model development.
