Best Paper Award for ARC Optimization Paper

Steven Hoffenson (Lead author, Ph.D. candidate, University of Michigan), Sudhakar Arepally (TARDEC), Michael Kokkolaras (UM) and Panos Papalambros (UM) won the Best Paper Award at the 2011 Ground Vehicle Systems Engineering and Technology Symposium (GVSETS). The paper "Ground Vehicle Safety Optimization Considering Blastworthiness and the Risks of High Weight and Fuel Consumption" describes an ARC-funded study to develop an optimization framework that uses physics-based simulations of vehicle blast events and empirical fuel consumption data to calculate and minimize combined total expected injuries from blast events and fuel convoys.

The award was presented by Dr. David Gorsich (Chief Scientist, TARDEC) at a ceremony Wednesday (Aug. 10th) evening.
