The objectives for this project are:

  • Develop a methodology to computationally evaluate current and future air filtration systems for Army vehicles.
  • Propose and study alternative air filtration solutions for the HMMWV.
  • Develop an advanced bypass valve control strategy for two-stage turbocharging system to improve low-end torque and transient characteristics while maintaining high speed efficiency.
  • Investigate the application of variable geometry turbine and variable nozzle compressor to the two-stage turbocharging system.

A validated computational methodology will allow the rapid evaluation of proposed intake air filtration solutions as well as predict filtration system maintenance cycles in extreme operating conditions. We will also assess different boosting strategies for enhancing engine power density and fuel economy as well as control strategies for improving performance and fuel economy using highly efficient and versatile boosting system.
