Diesel Engine Performance Fueled by Biodiesel Principal
Investigator University
Researchers Industry Government Students The project will contribute to army research concerning the use of alternative fuels for military engines. We will conduct experiments on a commercial truck engine (Detroit Diesel MBE 900) to determine the variation in engine performance when fueled by biodiesel instead of ultra low sulfur diesel fuel. Also, investigate the efficiency of the aftertreatment device and study exhaust gas emissions, both regulated and unregulated, for biodiesel operation. Finally, a simulation model for biodiesel combustion will be developed. The Army will benefit by knowing the trend in engine performance modifications when operated by different blends of biodiesel and the necessary modification of the engine controls to obtain the best performance.
Industry will benefit by knowing, beside the requirements regarding modifications of engine controls, the behavior and efficiency of aftertreatment devices under biodiesel operation. |
